5/13/2023 0 Comments Romanticism by Norbert WolfThere is little to argue with concerning Wolf's selection of art. The introduction is compact and well-organized, while the write-ups on individual artists and works are fairly informative. Norbert Wolf writes with clarity and energy throughout his overview of Romanticism. This is one of the better genre surveys by Taschen. Romantic styles and subjects varied widely throughout Europe and America, ranging from tranquil contemplative scenes to spectacularly staged events, and it is precisely this diversity that lends Romantic art its fascination and lasting influence. This volume gathers an essay situating the genre across different regions, crisp painting reproductions, and detailed interpretations of 31 crucial pieces to offer a comprehensive introduction to Romanticism. Beginning in the early 19th century, Romantic ideals developed largely in opposition to the traditions of Greco-Roman antiquity, and advocated an open-ended and progressive―that is, modern―view of the age.Yet Romantic artists, searching perhaps for unattainable ideals, also looked back to the late medieval and Renaissance periods for nostalgic themes of Judeo-Christian heritage drawing from these, they believed that a politically and intellectually enlightened utopia could be achieved. In a revolt against rationalism, Romanticism sought to return to nature and the belief in the goodness of humanity, with the artist considered to be a profoundly individual creator. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Solo leveling vol 2 light novelAt the time, Black Clover and Rising of the Shield Hero were consuming my free time and my former roommate said that I would love the intense fight scenes in Solo Leveling. And one of those titles that he was adamant about was Solo Leveling. I hadn’t even heard of the term until a few years ago when my former roommate suggested a few series that would catch this shonen boy’s eyes. In recent years, manhwa (also known as Korean graphic novels), have grown in popularity in Western countries alongside the growth of the online manga industry. If you are looking for your classic, uncomplicated shonen, then this book is for you! When mixing commonly found anime cliches, the focus then turns to plot and execution which Solo Leveling exceeds in. Solo Leveling mixes two very common elements in anime, main character fighting for others, and RPG-style power systems. Cliches are not always a bad thing, a manga/anime can be very cliche and still be amazing. Solo Leveling is good, but it doesn't feel like anything new. This makes for a kind of cliche shonen experience, which isn't to say is bad. To improve his stats, Jinwoo needs to physically train and defeat more dungeons. Jinwoo, the main character of Solo Leveling, (Solo Leveling Manga pg.17) 5/13/2023 0 Comments Death on nile bookThe other characters find her distasteful and annoying. One character is an author who is known for writing sexual novels, and she talks about sex most of the time. Wine and whiskey are drunk by the characters at mealtimes, and one character is discovered to be a drunk. Multiple murders are committed, as well as one non-fatal shooting, though none are described in graphic detail. References to God occasionally throughout, usually by Hercule Poirot. Communism and relativism are frowned upon. Murder is always showed as wrong, and Poirot speaks of the dangers of opening one's heart to evil, warning that evil will always accept the invitation. Now everyone on the boat is under suspicion and it's up to Hercule Poirot to unravel the web of mystery and deceit that surrounds the secretive group of travelers. When Linnet is murdered in the night, the killer seems obvious - until the suspect produces an airtight alibi. But when her husband's ex-fiancee, Linnet's former best friend, follows them on their Egyptian honeymoon and shadows their every move, chaos and mystery erupt. Linnet Ridgeway has everything any woman could ever want - beauty, wealth, fame, and a handsome and doting new husband. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Amazons and swallowsAt one point the Walker children tie their boat up to a dock with a sign warning against trespassers, but it is the dead of night and it would be dangerous for them to continue. While they never actually tell a direct lie about this, they are definitely not open about it, and a couple of grown-ups keep the secret for them as well. In one case, a couple of girls slip out of their house at night when they're supposed to be in bed. In general, the children of Swallows and Amazons are about as moral heroes as you could ask for, honorable and responsible, with only a couple of exceptions. The six children proceed to have grand adventures as they plot the downfall of 'retired pirate Captain Flint', the Blackett's inattentive uncle. While on their grand adventure, they meet the Blackett girls, Nancy and Ruth, who sail the pirate ship the Amazon. When the Walker family spend their summer in the British lake country, they beg to be allowed to sail their small boat, Swallow, and camp out on a small island in the center of the lake. A charming sea adventure with a noble crew. 5/13/2023 0 Comments A certain appeal by vanessa kingMing sits at a makeup station, feigning innocence, a row of false eyelashes dangling from her fingers like a cigarette. The Twins carry on with their stretches on the far side of the dressing room, Ginn slouching and bored in a front split, Tonic doing her best to look shocked as she holds cobra pose. She lowers her reading glasses to hang from the gold chain at her neck, eyes shifting to study each of us in turn. A Mad Libs sheet hangs limply between the tips of her thumb and forefinger, the page held away from her, as though to keep the vulgarity she so thoughtfully “redacted” from staining her white blouse. “It is a redacted universally acknowledged, that a throbbing redacted in possession of a thick redacted must be in want of a redacted.” Andrea bites out each “redacted” with a distaste that grows more resigned with every repetition, the final utterance leaving her on little more than a throaty British sigh. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Limitations by JD RiggsIt is not so well known that corrosion can also be prevented in suitable cases by anodic polarisation, and it is certainly very much more difficult to understand why this should be so from the somewhat oversimplified theory of corrosion which the non-specialist is bound to have. In fact, the position is somewhat more complicated and, in many cases, other factors override this apparently simple one. Corrosion involves the oxidation of the metal and it is reasonable to expect that cathodic polarisation, which discourages oxidation and favours reductions at the metal surface, should tend to cause protection. It is well known that corrosion can sometimes be controlled by cathodic currents and, even with an elementary knowledge of electrochemistry, it is easy to appreciate why this should be so. The band produced only two albums in two years, yet their musical legacy lives on. Utopia Avenue might be the most curious British band you've never heard of.Įmerging from London's psychedelic scene in 1967, folksinger Elf Holloway, blues bassist Dean Moss, guitar virtuoso Jasper de Zoet and jazz drummer Griff Griffin together created a unique sound, with lyrics that captured their turbulent times.
